September Volunteer Spotlight: Jonathan Lilienfeld

Jonathan Lilienfeld started volunteering for the pantry shortly after he retired in 2009. He and fellow volunteer Paul Browne are in charge of placing the sizable Greater Boston Food Bank order and picking it up every two weeks from the food bank (see “Did You Know? below). He also fills the role of handyman at the pantry. Jonathan says, “When I started at the pantry, I was shocked that there were so many Newton residents that experienced food insecurity. As time has passed, the problem has only gotten worse. It feels good to be doing my small part to help alleviate the issue.” Jonathan has seen the volume of food that the NFP orders from the GBFB double or even triple since he started at the pantry.

In his spare time, Jonathan enjoys travel, hiking and cycling, or anything else that gets him out experiencing the natural world or other cultures. This was his sixth year of participation in the Pan Mass Challenge; he has been very motivated to raise money in memory of his wife as well as other friends that he has lost to cancer. Jonathan also enjoys memorizing poetry and is trying to learn Spanish.

Thank you, Jonathan, for everything that you do for the pantry!
